Body image is the subjective image people have of their own body. It is distinct from how their body actually appears and is a complex emotional experience. It is made up of beliefs, thoughts, perceptions, feelings, and behaviors. The way we see ourselves and our bodies has an impact on our mental health, physical health, and our relationships. A healthy body image involves having an objective perception of one’s appearance and an ability to separate one’s value as a person from the way one looks. Whereas, a negative body image can contribute to body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), eating disorders, and other mental and physical conditions.
